Designing for Today’s Members

Golf clubs are no longer simply venues for sport – they’re social spaces, dining destinations, and often sought-after event locations. As member expectations evolve and the leisure landscape grows increasingly competitive, many clubs are rethinking how their clubhouses serve both functionality and experience. The shift is clear: modern golf clubs must deliver more than a well-kept course – they must offer well-designed, multipurpose environments that are both welcoming and commercially viable.

CIC has worked alongside several progressive golf clubs to help realise that vision, breathing new life into dated interiors and unlocking the potential of underused spaces. At Woodbridge Golf Club, for example, a complete front-of-house refurbishment transformed a 1960s layout into a contemporary, open-plan setting. Key structural challenges, including complex block-and-beam features and hidden columns, were addressed with innovative thinking, preserving flow while enhancing access and aesthetics. The result is a space that now reflects the club’s premium status and delivers a more inclusive, sociable experience for members.

Bedfordshire Golf Club took a different but equally future-focused approach, investing in a purpose-built Swing Studio. Designed in partnership with CIC, the space has quickly become a revenue-driving feature while catering to modern golfers’ growing appetite for virtual training. This, alongside upgraded changing facilities, has positioned the club to retain and attract a broader membership.

Enfield Golf Club’s transformation is another example of where strategy and design come together. CIC repurposed underutilised rooms into functional, high-value spaces, including a new swing room and reconfigured lounge areas, while overcoming significant structural challenges. One cost-saving solution involved reengineering a roof structure to eliminate the need for external scaffolding. Additionally, thoughtful reworking of the internal layout helped solve longstanding issues with acoustics between the function suite and member areas – boosting comfort for guests and operational efficiency for staff.

Across each project, the common thread is collaboration. CIC works closely with golf club boards, structural engineers, and design teams to ensure that every change supports both the member experience and the club’s commercial goals. It’s not about chasing trends, it’s about building longevity into spaces that matter.
