PROJECT OVERVIEW.

Compass Community School Fen Park, situated on the site of the former Bicker Preparatory School, was developed to support children with diverse and complex needs.

 

The project involved renovating and extending a vacant, unmodernised former preparatory school, replacing flat roofs, repairing interiors, and restoring finishes. External repairs included the facade, windows, and outdoor areas. The new School includes a DDA-compliant toilet extension, two new garden pods (sensory room and therapy room), and six new classrooms for 40 pupils.

 

CIC was engaged to manage and execute the transformation of the school, ensuring that the space met the unique needs of both students and educators. They worked closely with NNP a specialist care developer, dedicated to supporting providers in meeting the increasing demand for specialist care and education placements across the UK. This partnership was instrumental in ensuring that the school’s infrastructure was tailored to the end user needs.

Key Deliverables & Solutions.

Sound-Absorbing Classrooms
Noise sensitivity can be a significant challenge for many students in specialist education settings. CIC installed sound-absorbing materials in classrooms to create a more controlled and focused learning environment, minimising auditory distractions and enhancing concentration.

 

Security and Access Control
Security in an educational setting is paramount, and CIC worked with a contractor to install access control system. This state-of-the-art electronic system, controlled via a central computer, provides secure and efficient access management, ensuring the safety of students and staff alike.

 

Space Optimisation – External Cabins and extension
Recognising the need for additional teaching and quiet spaces, CIC utilised a crane to position two external cabins behind the main school building. One cabin was designated as a sensory room, while the second provided a therapy room.

Additionally, CIC added to the existing footprint by building an extension fully equipped with a DDA compliant toilet.

 

Structural Enhancements
Several structural challenges emerged during the project, requiring CIC’s expertise in value engineering. The exam room needed additional internal cladding to meet regulatory requirements. The timber ceiling originally designed for the space proved insufficient, leading CIC to rework the supporting wall to accommodate the necessary modifications. Additionally, the nurse’s room was in a constrained space, requiring CIC to reconfigure the layout to ensure functionality without compromising comfort.

 

Aesthetic Enhancements
To create a welcoming and calming environment, CIC installed faux plant areas in the reception, softening the atmosphere while maintaining a professional and structured aesthetic.
